Chapter Seven

Cameron

They returned to Perry’s house, where it had been arranged that they would all meet up after collecting the children. When they walked in, Cam was ambushed by a hug from Charlie. The smaller shifter threw himself at Cameron the moment the children had walked past him and into the house, hugging him tight. He laughed, hugging Charlie back before pulling away far enough to look him in the face. The happiness on his friend’s face said a lot. “Charlie! I take it things worked out yesterday, after Jake dragged me away?”

“Not just for me, I hear!” Charlie’s eyes went wide in astonishment. “Why didn’t you tell me Bobby was your mate?” His arms were still around Cam’s waist as he smiled up at him in delight.

Before he could answer, a growl sounded to their right and then another one from the open doorway behind Cam a second later. Charlie released him, stepped closer to Perry, and pulled him down to whisper something to him, which silenced the growl coming from the Alpha, and then the couple walked off with Charlie throwing a wink back at Cameron. Cam looked over at Bobby as his mate stepped round him from the doorway. Bobby was still growling low in his chest, and he was glaring after Charlie. Cameron leaned in to speak softly in his ear. “What happened to Mr. Lightened Up?”

Bobby shot him a nasty look which hit Cam like a punch to the gut, knocking the air from his lungs. “You have to be joking. Yesterday you were draped all over him. Do you have any idea how much that hurt? Today I walk in to see him draped all over you! Our mating can’t mean all that much to you because it didn’t take you very long to get bored, did it?” His voice was low enough for no one else to be able to hear him. “Better stay away from Charlie, he’s my brother’s, find someone else to play your little games with.” The look he gave Cameron was one of pure hate. Then Bobby turned his back and stalked off, leaving a devastated Cameron in his wake.

A nasty sensation constricted Cam’s stomach and he stood, rooted to the spot, watching Bobby walk away, ushering the children along in front of him. What the hell just happened? I thought we were past this? I thought he understood.

“Brother! I didn’t get the chance earlier to say congratulations on your mating.” Perry’s voice boomed out as Bobby passed out of sight into the kitchen, leaving Cameron reeling. He couldn’t hear Bobby’s reply over the roaring in his ears. He still felt like Bobby had punched him. What did I do? His eyes burned with tears which fought to escape.

He backed out through the still open door and turned to sit on the porch steps in a stunned silence. Minutes passed like hours as he sat there, feeling numb. His elbows rested on his knees, and his fists, which were tightly clenched together, supported his chin.
